You don't always have to drive a half hour or more and deal with the stresses that come along with a long all day adventure. Like missed naps, not having enough time, or maybe you didn't go to the store and have no snacks to bring along. We all know it's not a good idea to go on a long adventure and not have the proper amount of snacks for your little hungry hippo. I don't know about you but my kids turn into the seagulls from Finding Nemo... "mine, mine, mine, mine"
I will admit, I usually do look for those cool hidden spots with a waterfall, bridges, beach, which tend to be 30+ miles away. For me, I've been to a whole lot of places within the 30 mile distance so if I want to explore somewhere new, I'm looking at an hour + drive... one way.
I love to see new places and explore history but sometimes it's just a whole lot easier to not have to worry about all that comes with a long far away adventure.
So today when the kids and I were itching to get outside, but there wasn't enough time to go somewhere and be back by dinner, we decided to take a walk. We ended up in a big empty field down the street. We got rid of all our suppressed winter energy and just ran around screaming like crazy people. We brought nothing but a magnifying glass (and my camera of course :P) to look at what's going on beneath us.
A big storm was on its way and the clouds were getting darker and darker. When Lorenzo looked up and saw the dark clouds he had a lot of questions. This led us to a discussion why it rains and what it does to the earth. Lorenzo decided it was good that it rains so all the flowers can come back (his words exactly).
We then talked about the different seasons and weather that goes along with those seasons. The conversations are endless when you just get outside. So it doesn't matter where you go or how far, just get out and explore.
